About this workshop

Most of us were never taught to listen — only to respond. Attuned Listening is a skill-building session that goes beneath communication tips to something more fundamental: the disciplined capacity to accurately perceive what someone is actually experiencing, and to respond in a way that creates safety and trust.

Drawing on EY Global Neuroinclusion Research (2025) and the science of psychological safety, this workshop gives teams and leaders a shared language and concrete tools they can use the same day. This is a leadership skill — not a soft skill.

Why this matters now

Across fast-moving organisations, teams are navigating more change, more complexity, and more communication across difference. When listening quality drops, issues surface too late, friction rises, and people stop speaking up. The highest leverage point is often manager behaviour: it sets the communication climate — yet most managers have never been explicitly trained in structured listening under pressure. The result is reactive decision-making, late-stage issue escalation, and reduced psychological safety development across the team.

The core model: RIRA

Attuned Listening is built on a four-step protocol participants can apply in real conversations:

  • Regulate — Pause and reduce internal reactivity before responding

  • Inquire — Ask one clarifying question before concluding

  • Reflect — Mirror content and emotional tone accurately

  • Advance — Move toward solutions only after alignment is established

 

This is not about agreement. It is not about avoiding accountability. It is about increasing clarity before action.

What your team will take away

Participants leave with a clear definition of Attuned Listening and why it differs from simply staying quiet, the RIRA four-step model as a shared team framework, three core practices — 90-Second Reset, Reflect-Before-Respond, and the THINK Response Filter — and practical awareness of common listening barriers including reactivity, assumptions and emotional flooding. They also gain language for giving and receiving feedback without shutting people down — tools they can apply in the next one-to-one, the next team meeting, and the next conflict moment.

How it works

The session combines short input, paired exercises and guided group reflection. Participants practise staying grounded before and during challenging conversations, checking what they heard against what was actually said, and choosing curiosity over conclusion. The format is focused, immediately applicable, and designed for real behaviour change — not just awareness.

Attuned Listening is delivered by Rachel Woodroof, founder of Greenhouse Consulting & Coaching, and developed in collaboration with Bipolar & Belong. What can come after

For some teams, this workshop is enough to shift meeting culture and issue escalation patterns.
